The Cotopaxi volcano, like a nearly perfect snow cone, rises to 5,897 meters and is perhaps, alongside the Galápagos, the greatest symbol of our natural geography, recognized worldwide.
While walking in this area, it will be relatively easy to spot rabbits, skunks, and even deer and Andean weasels, as well as hawks, pigs, quilicos, and Andean seagulls soaring through the sky. With luck, sometimes condors and mandolins can be seen. At Limpiopungo lagoon, Andean ducks can be observed.
Two marsupial mammals inhabit the park, Andean foxes and marsupial mice. Marsupial frogs, lizards, and guagsas add to the range of diversity.
This tour begins early in the morning from Hacienda El Porvenir towards Cotopaxi National Park, an iconic Ecuadorian destination every tourist should experience. After crossing the paramo plains, we arrive at the parking area where we start our ascent towards Refugio José Ribas, located at 4,800 meters (15,744 feet) above sea level. Here, we can witness the snow and, with luck, spot some highland animals.
We continue our journey to Limpiopungo Lagoon where we'll enjoy a packed lunch. Afterwards, we traverse valleys until we reach Pucará del Salitre, an ancient Inca fortress. Finally, we return to the Hacienda.
