Lower trails of the hacienda (1 hour): A one-hour tour through the lower part of Hacienda El Porvenir, where we observe the traditional practices of a working hacienda. We will see wild and domesticated cattle grazing in the pastures. This horseback ride follows drivable paths and takes us to the area of the corrals and bullring, where we can learn about the history of the hacienda and its current operations.
Altos del Rumiñahui (3.5 horas): Spectacular journey starting from the lower part of the Hacienda through agricultural areas, then into remnants of high Andean forest and scrubland. The first part of the ride is at a gentle pace to familiarize with the horses. There are good chances of picking up speed, either trotting or galloping across the páramo of Rumiñahui. You'll reach the base of Rumiñahui's Central Summit and stop for a hot drink. There are many opportunities to spot Andean birds, herds of wild horses, and wild cattle. On clear days, a breathtaking view of over 12 volcanoes will delight your sight.
Owl's Refuge (4 hours): After a briefing on horse handling, we will head to the famous Owl's Refuge. This ride crosses the southwestern slopes of Volcán Rumiñahui on exclusive trails of the hacienda. A marvelous path leads us to Chusigmachai, home of the Great Horned Owl, a seasonal resident of the cave whom we may observe with luck and silence. In the cave, we can also appreciate several hummingbird nests. This cave is a geologically protected formation from wind and rain, serving as a refuge for various animals. Along the way, we will enjoy a packed lunch.
Boundaries of Cotopaxi National Park (6 hours): After a briefing on horse handling, your ride will begin on the exclusive trails of El Porvenir towards the boundaries of the hacienda and Cotopaxi National Park. Along the way, you'll cross the slopes of Volcán Rumiñahui. Traveling through majestic Andean panoramas, you can observe herds of wild bulls, birds, and spectacular landscapes. Eventually, you'll arrive near the rocky peaks of Rumiñahui where, on a clear day, you'll have the opportunity to admire Volcán Cotopaxi. Additionally, you'll pass through Chusigmachai, or the Owl's Refuge, where you'll make a brief stop to enjoy a packed lunch.
